Dental Implants
A dental implant is a synthetic prosthesis that is carefully placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The implant has the added benefit that it does not rely on adjacent teeth to be anchored to replace a missing tooth.
Everybody is different and therefore implants might not be the best resolution for everyone. You need to speak to your dentist and discuss it to find out if you are an implant candidate. You need to be in good health and have good solid bone where the implant will be placed. Your gums should also be healthy and disease free. Contra-indications for having implants are: Bruxism, clenching, systemic disease (e.g. Diabetes), history of radiotherapy in the head and neck region, smoking, excessive drinking, etc. You should look after an implant the same way you look after the rest of your teeth. Good oral hygiene is the key to having a very high success rate with implant treatment.
It is advisable to ask your oral hygienist for the best ways of cleaning around your implants once they are placed.
