Pregnancy

Some changes will appear in your oral health during pregnancy. With the higher levels of hormones, you will find that plaque will collect more easily on the teeth’s surfaces and you will also experience that you are more prone to having bleeding gums. The best way to counteract for these symptoms is by having a very good oral hygiene regime. Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste, use floss and alcohol free fluoride mouthwash daily. Dental treatment can get very uncomfortable in the third trimester; therefore it is good to see your dentist early on in your pregnancy that early pregnancy gingivitis and other problems can be detected. It is useful to keep regular hygienist appointments to help remove plaque and help to keep the gums disease free during pregnancy. Taking of x-rays should be avoided at all times unless it really becomes necessary in the event of an emergency. The best times for dental treatment are between the 4th and the 6th month of pregnancy. Any procedure which can be postponed should be delayed until after the birth of the baby.
